Tortilla is a basic ingredient in the
Mexican cuisine. It is used for making
tortilla chips, fajitas, burritos, chimichangas and more. There are two basic types of tortillas,
flour tortillas and
corn tortillas. Flour tortillas are made with flour, lard or vegetable shortening,
salt and water. Corn tortillas are made with masa (or corn meal), lard or vegetable shortening,
salt and water. To make corn tortillas you need a
tortilla press, a device that helps in shaping the tortilla.
Tortillas are available in packages of 4, 6, 8 or 12, in small and large sizes.
